Prevention Thru Education

In June, Paumanok Chapter 85 received a $5,000.00 completive grant for our project "Prevention thru Education".  $2,000.00 was spent on educational text books and $992.50 was spent on movie media. These much needed educational materials were purchased for the staff of Suffolk County Coalition Against Domestic Violence (SCCADV). $2,000.00  was spent on brochures to be distributed to the public.  On July 19, 2007 Chapter members spent a day of domestic violence training led by Ms. Staub of SCCADV.   After the training session, 1/3 of the text books and movie media were presented to the Coalition.  October is Domestic Violence Awareness month and our chapter looks forward to assisting SCCADV in educating the public on the issue of Domestic Violence.

Not Just a Shelter

In June, Paumanok Chapter 85 was awarded a $5,000.00 competitive grant for our project "Not Just a Shelter". On July 19th our chapter members visited Suffolk County Coalition Against Domestic Violence's safe house to evaluate the children's playroom which we will convert into a family/education/playroom. This room will be repainted, a new carpet will be installed, the sofa will be replaced, bookshelves will be installed. A new TV with built in DVD player will be purchased and mounted to the wall. A wall length bench with storage is being built now. Our Life Members will be making cushions and curtains for the room. The book shelves will be filled with new books and toys for the victims of domestic violence that use this safe house as their temporary new home. Our members will visit the shelter periodically after we have finished the room conversion, presenting the residents with Mother Goose, Project Connect, The Dictionary Project, Power Up to Read, and blankets and books. This project is currently underway. The pictures below show the room before any conversions were done.
